Flashback: "Walking with the Wind" review - May 1998

WEB SERVICES: Walking With the Wind by John Lewis Review by  Robert Nebel (CNN) -- As a child, Georgia congressman John Lewis knew he was the "different seed" from the rest of his cotton farming family in 1940's Troy, Alabama. Like the orderly rows of cotton plants on the farm, Lewis felt his parents and siblings all too often "fell in line" and easily accepted the harsh Jim Crow segregation laws of the South. Even as a young boy, Lewis knew that he had to be the one to fall out of that orderly line and challenge the system -- a system that he felt kept those in his family and race from achieving their full potential. Little did Lewis know that by being "the different seed" he would one day be at the forefront of changing America's attitude toward race relations. That theme plays throughout Lewis' autobiography, "Walking With The Wind". Lewis starts out recounting a childhood filled with painful memories of separ...

Marketers Must Think That I'm Really Old

Image
Sometimes I feel much older than what my television viewing habits suggest. I enjoy the evening news programs on the big three networks’ schedule. While many feel that these programs have gone the way of the Dodo bird, I still find them relevant. Just the other day,  the weekend version of NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt   produced an excellent piece on the man who was portrayed in the new Bradley Cooper film,   American Sniper .  Holt profiled Chris Kyle the person who Cooper portrays in the film. Kyle performed multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and returned to the States to help out fellow veterans. As most of us know, Kyle's story did not end well. Fortunately, Holt had the foresight a few years back to conduct an in-depth interview with Kyle. The complete story is available online as of this writing. Holt presented   this story again on   The Today Show.    The story is informative, enlightening and fascinating....

Fireworks could be coming to a retailer near you

House Bill 15 was introduced in the Georgia House of Representatives. The bill proposes to lift the ban on the sale of consumer fireworks and bottle rockets. Apparently the saying, “You learn something new each day” could not be truer. Every July the Fourth and New Year’s Eve, one would never know that bottle rockets and fireworks have been banned in the Peach State. Indeed we all ought to have fun on those designated evenings in the year, but I confess there are times that it can sound like a war zone out there. Speaking of war zones, in some neighborhoods those celebratory sounds are more authentic when gunfire is mixed into the festivities.  OK, everyone knows that celebratory gunfire is a definite “no-no” in our neck of the woods, but actually enforcing the fireworks ban on those certain dates gets into fuzzy territory. If one attempts to phone authorities about rogue fireworks on July the Fourth, most likely the authorities do not wish to be bothered. They have bigger fish ...

One day we might say, "buh-bye" to the password

Image
Don't you just hate dealing with passwords? Call them passwords, "passcodes," they're a pain in the backside. With so many websites requiring passwords these days, it's no wonder that many of us would love to pull a "Howard Beale" from the film Network , open up the windows and shout, "I'm not going to take it anymore!" Let's face it: Passwords stink. They are hard to remember since we are required to make them tough for cyber thieves to get into our sites. Passwords are nearly impossible to recover when they are forgotten. They're difficult to store in a convenient place when we need a place to locate them. For years there have been all types of way individuals and companies have been dealing with the password issue. From creating "tough to break" passwords to consistently changing them, businesses and citizens of the world have been doing everything they could to protect themselves from cyber thieves. Scor...

After every New Year, we’re bombarded with health advice from all quarters. Whether it’s in on television, radio, in our newspapers and magazines or on the Web, suddenly the health gurus crawl out of the woodwork to announce the new “20 must-do exercises” and the “10 foods you need to avoid.” The myriad of health advice in the New Year or at any time of the year is mind-boggling. This leaves the majority of the nation clueless and ready to give up on being healthy and/or “battling the bulge” while the health mavens get richer by the second. I love the health advice that the fit actor Dick Van Dyke provided on TBS’  Conan  program last year: “Just keep moving.” Apparently Mr. Van Dyke was urged to write a health advice book which should be released on his 90th birthday in December. I’ll add to Mr. Van Dyke’s advice by saying, “Do what’s right for you.” This means going to your personal physician to design exercise and diet plans that work for you. Seeking out...
